I said please Mr Socrates Just let me finish my elevenses You and your lateral thinking put me so ill at ease I don’t have the time for a trip down the Euphrates today Coz when you’re going to B from A It’s quicker to stick to the throughway When you’re going to B from A It’s quicker to stick to the throughway See that girl from the Hebrides She’s much faster than Pheidippides Catches her men with such expertise Crossing from Brooklyn to Los Angeles twice a day And when she’s travelling to LA She always sticks to the throughway When she’s travelling to LA She always sticks to the throughway Watch the stars from the big movies They take vacation in the Pyrenees Follow little boats on their water skis They ain’t in no hurry – collected their fees yesterday But if somebody owes you some pay You’d better get down to the throughway Yes if somebody owes you some pay You’d better get down to the throughway It’s where you’ve got to go

Mama said you’d better believe it Everyone’s got to go to school Daddy said better be a good boy Don’t want you growing up a fool Tell everybody that I used to know I’m livin’ in the city now playin’ rock ‘n’ roll My brother said don’t give in easy Sister said try to stay cool Teachers told me rebels get nowhere It’s best to stick to the rules Well tell everybody that I used to know I’m livin’ in the city now playin’ rock ‘n’ roll The preacher didn’t give me no bible So how’d he expect me to settle down? We always had good times Friends was easily found Yes you can tell everybody that I used to know I’m livin’ in the city and playin’ rock ‘n’ roll Some things sure come easy But others you’ve got to work for The little girl who caught my eye Only lived next door But I never did get to kiss her If you feel like getting out To live a life on your own You can’t stay trapped in This barbed-wire battle zone Tell everybody that I used to know I’m livin’ in the city I’m playin’ rock ‘n’ roll

I like my beer and I like my wine I used to like my woman, ‘cause she’d treat me kind She was there last night when I got home But I woke up this morning to find she’d gone She’s a lullaby when you need one A butterfly in any season My behaviour was good when it might have been bad I looked after her as much as every drink I ever had She must have been upset to want to leave me this way Sneaking out in the dark instead of waiting for day She’s a diplomat for certain As tasty as a pint of burton It’s important things that you always forget Like I can’t recall how or when we met Was there snow on my shoes or the sun on my back? Was it a second-hand Ford or a new Cadillac? She’s the sunrise when you see her A rainbow of sound to hear I suppose we got married after a while Rented a place and had us a child But I can’t be sure if that’s how things went We could have had kittens while we lived in a tent She’s the memory I’m missing When I say she was real I’m just guessing When I go for a drink it's to the Felbridge Star Which is one of the best places near and far Joe's okay and he'll treat you fine Unless you cause trouble or you step out of line And the burton that he sells is pretty tasty Though sometimes it runs out if I drink too much Just like my wife ran out when I drank too much
