about

Instrumental. A funky tribute to the great guitarist Jimmy Nolen, who made such an important contribution to the sound of James Brown's bands. The chord under analysis is an E9 located with its root on the seventh fret - instantly recognisable when it follows the vocal hook in "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag". I've actually played it here in a more Nile Rodgers vs Steve Cropper kind of way - since I wasn't having a vocal, I needed a bit more meat on the bone. Huge contribution from trumpeter Martin Smith, giving a nice Oakland flavour to the funk.
